Aston Villa sanction another late exit as defender seals League One move

Aston Villa defender Josh Feeney has completed a season-long loan move to Peterborough United as the club continue to finalise their squad before the transfer window closes.

The 21-year-old will spend the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign in League One after Peterborough confirmed his arrival from Villa.

Feeney joins Peterborough with considerable EFL experience already behind him, having made 31 appearances in all competitions during a loan spell with Huddersfield Town last season.

He previously made 39 appearances for Shrewsbury Town during the 2024/25 campaign and has also spent time with Spanish side Real Unión.

Josh Feeney gets another Aston Villa loan opportunity

Feeney joined Villa from Fleetwood Town in 2021 and has progressed through the academy, although he is yet to establish himself in Unai Emery‘s senior side.

Regular first-team football has therefore become central to his development.

His Huddersfield spell was disrupted towards the end of last season, with ReadAstonVilla reporting in April that Feeney had returned to Villa for treatment after suffering an injury.

He returned to action this summer and started for Villa’s Under-21s against Brighton before another League One opportunity emerged.

Speaking after completing his Peterborough move, Feeney said he now feels accustomed to the demands of senior football after his previous loan spells.

“I feel I am used to it now.”

Peterborough manager Luke Williams also highlighted Feeney’s combination of defensive qualities and ability in possession after the deal was completed.

The move fits Villa’s wider strategy for their academy prospects.

Villa have already sent goalkeeper Sam Proctor to Shrewsbury on a season-long loan, while several other youngsters have been allowed to leave Bodymoor Heath in search of regular senior minutes.

For Feeney, a third successive League One campaign offers another opportunity to prove he can become more than an academy prospect.

Peterborough gain a defender already accustomed to the division, while Villa can assess his progress from a distance before making a longer-term decision over his future.
