Aston Villa sanction late exit after deadline-day deal sheet drama

Aston Villa winger Luka Lynch has completed a loan move to Oxford United after the two clubs required a Deadline Day deal sheet to get the transfer over the line.

The 19-year-old has joined the League One side until 2 January, giving him his first opportunity to play regular senior football away from Villa.

Oxford United officially confirmed Lynch’s arrival on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the transfer remained unresolved beyond Tuesday night’s 11pm deadline.

Jacob Tanswell reported shortly after the deadline that Villa and Oxford had submitted a deal sheet, giving the clubs additional time to finish the required paperwork.

An announcement was then expected on Wednesday, with the transfer now formally completed.

Luka Lynch gets first senior Aston Villa loan

The temporary move rewards Lynch after an impressive summer around Unai Emery’s senior squad.

He scored against Walsall before producing Villa’s goal during their 2-1 defeat against Porto.

ReadAstonVilla highlighted Lynch’s impressive performance at the Estádio do Dragão after the academy prospect struck an excellent equaliser against the Portuguese champions.

Lynch had also contributed four goals and two assists across 11 Premier League 2 appearances last season.

His performances earned him further exposure around Emery’s first team, but Villa’s substantial summer recruitment has made competitive minutes difficult to guarantee.

Oxford now provide the next step.

Head coach Aaron Ramsey described Lynch as an “exciting young winger” and highlighted his willingness to take defenders on.

“He’s direct, has good ability in one-on-one situations and has the confidence to make things happen in the final third,” Ramsey told Oxford United’s official website.

Aston Villa continue academy loan strategy

Lynch becomes another highly-rated Villa youngster allowed to gain EFL experience this summer.

Josh Feeney has already joined Peterborough United after Villa sanctioned his season-long League One loan.

Triston Rowe also departed for Belgium, with Sporting Charleroi securing an option to buy as part of the Deadline Day loan agreement.

Lynch’s situation is slightly different.

The January expiry gives Villa an opportunity to reassess his development halfway through the campaign rather than committing him elsewhere for the entire season.

He arrives at Oxford having shown during pre-season that he can make an impact against senior opposition.

Now the challenge is doing it every week.
