Sanson has uncertain future at Villa

Morgan Sanson joined Aston Villa on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Olympique Marseille in January 2021 and has gone on to make only 20 appearances in all competitions. The 27-year-old has struggled for form, fitness and playing time since making the switch last year, so his future at Villa Park is up in the air.

Sanson made only 9/21 Premier League appearances in his debut season, amassing 291/1890 minutes of football. This campaign has seen the uncapped Frenchman make 10/31 league appearances, playing 352 minutes from a possible 2790, so is the writing is on the wall? Three league starts in an entire season suggests it is.

Marvelous Nakamba is recovering with a knee injury but was ahead of Sanson in the pecking order when fit. Douglas Luiz and John McGinn have also been preferred over the 5ft 9in player, so it’s hard to see how Sanson will get more playing time.

Steven Gerrard is on the hunt for a defensive-midfielder this summer, with Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips, Olympique Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Yves Bissouma on his radar, so the Frenchman may need to leave for the sake of his career.
