The Aston Villa Carabao Cup draw takes place on Wednesday night as Unai Emery’s side enter the competition in the third round.

Villa received a bye through the opening two rounds because they are competing in the Champions League this season.

The EFL has confirmed the third-round draw will be conducted on Wednesday, 26 August following Preston North End’s second-round tie against Everton.

That game kicks off at 8pm BST, placing the main draw at approximately 10pm if the tie finishes without a lengthy delay. Supporters can watch the proceedings live on Sky Sports.

A preliminary draw will be held during the build-up to determine whether Villa and the seven other clubs competing in the Champions League or Europa League will play at home or away.

The eight protected clubs are Villa, Arsenal, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Sunderland.

Who can Aston Villa face in the Carabao Cup?

Those eight teams cannot face one another in the third round. Each will instead be paired with a club from a separate bowl containing the remaining qualifiers.

The final eight ties will then be drawn normally, with the competition no longer divided into northern and southern sections.

Several places remain unresolved before Wednesday’s fixtures, meaning Villa could be drawn against the winner of a second-round tie rather than a confirmed team.

Third-round matches will be divided between the weeks beginning 7 and 14 September to accommodate European fixtures.

Villa return to domestic action against Arsenal on Monday before beginning another congested period across three competitions.

The EFL had not confirmed Villa’s individual ball number at the time of publication.
