Aston Villa could have a route to register Taylor Harwood-Bellis for the Champions League before the knockout stages.
UEFA’s injury-replacement provision allows a limited change during the league phase, although strict conditions apply.
That matters after injuries to Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen increased the pressure on Unai Emery’s defensive options.
Harwood-Bellis was omitted from Villa’s initial European list following his arrival from Southampton. Our original report on Emery’s decision explained the manager’s reliance on alternative cover.
However, an omission does not necessarily rule a player out of every remaining league-phase fixture.
How Aston Villa could register Harwood-Bellis
Under Article 31 of UEFA’s Champions League regulations, clubs may temporarily replace one outfield player with a long-term injury or illness.
The provision applies during the league phase, up to and including matchday six.
The injury or illness must last at least 60 days. Clubs must submit medical evidence, and UEFA can request further examination.
The replacement must also have been registered with the club before the initial List A deadline. Relevant locally trained player requirements must remain satisfied.
Those conditions mean Villa cannot simply add Harwood-Bellis because their defence is stretched.
There is no confirmed application or approval in the reporting reviewed for this article.
Maatsen’s reported absence does not guarantee eligibility
Jacob Tanswell reported that Maatsen faces six to eight weeks out after scans revealed ankle tendon damage.
That estimate covers approximately 42 to 56 days, below UEFA’s minimum 60-day threshold.
It therefore does not, by itself, establish a qualifying absence.
Torres’ hamstring problem also creates uncertainty, but an injury concern alone cannot trigger the replacement provision.

The regular registration opportunity comes after the league phase
Villa would have another opportunity to change their squad if they qualify for the knockout stages.
UEFA’s subsequent-registration rules allow up to three new eligible players after the league phase.
The deadline is 4 February 2027 at 11.59pm CET. Squad-size and locally trained player requirements still apply.
The general List A ceiling is 25 players, with reserved places for locally trained players. Villa’s 23-man submission should not be mistaken for a universal Champions League limit.
For now, Harwood-Bellis can pursue opportunities domestically, with our Coventry team-news guide covering Emery’s immediate options.
The European route exists. Whether Villa can use it depends on meeting the regulations, rather than simply needing another defender.
