Aston Villa are reportedly monitoring highly-rated Paraguayan defender Mauro Coronel as Unai Emery continues to plan for the future of his back line.
The 18-year-old has established himself as a regular for Club Nacional this season and is attracting interest from several European clubs.
Brighton are currently regarded as frontrunners for his signature, but Villa remain firmly in the race.
The situation is particularly interesting because Coronel’s contract is due to expire at the end of December, potentially creating an opportunity to secure one of South America’s emerging defensive prospects without a major transfer fee.
Aston Villa tracking Mauro Coronel
Villa are continuing to monitor Coronel while Brighton lead the Premier League interest in the Paraguay Under-20 international, according to TEAMtalk’s latest report on the defender.
Several other English clubs have reportedly sent scouts to watch him during 2026, while sides from La Liga are also interested.
No formal offer has yet been accepted.
Nacional are keen to retain Coronel until the conclusion of the Paraguayan season, but his contractual situation means attention surrounding his future should intensify towards the end of the year.
The 6ft 2in centre-back has earned praise for his aerial ability and composure in possession while establishing himself in senior football at just 18.
For Villa, the interest fits with a broader attempt to strengthen their defensive options for both the present and future.
Villa continue planning beyond summer defensive rebuild
Emery already oversaw significant changes at centre-back during the summer.
Villa eventually completed a £30million move for Taylor Harwood-Bellis after finally landing the Southampton defender following two rejected bids.
That deal came after Villa considered several alternatives during their search for an Ezri Konsa replacement, including Joel Ordóñez and Jean-Clair Todibo.
Coronel would represent a very different type of recruitment.
Rather than arriving as an immediate first-team replacement, the Paraguayan could be viewed as a longer-term prospect capable of developing within Emery’s squad.
Villa’s current defensive situation also underlines why succession planning remains important.
Victor Lindelöf has become increasingly influential while Pau Torres remains unavailable, with the Swede quietly emerging as a valuable part of Emery’s defensive plans.
Coronel’s age, senior experience and contractual situation therefore make him an intriguing option.
Brighton currently appear to have the advantage, and there is no suggestion that Villa have made an offer.
However, with his Nacional contract approaching its conclusion and several European clubs watching closely, Coronel is now a name worth tracking ahead of the January window.
