Aston Villa captain McGinn backs Scotland boss despite winless start

Aston Villa captain John McGinn insists Scotland’s players are behind Sebastien Pocognoli as the new manager searches for his first victory.

Scotland visit North Macedonia tonight after a goalless draw with Slovenia and a 3–0 defeat against Switzerland.

John McGinn delivers Scotland backing

Speaking ahead of the match, McGinn told the Scottish Sun:

“The manager’s ideas have been great. The most important thing is the buy-in from the players, which he is getting.”

McGinn also described his role as broadly unchanged, with greater tactical adjustments elsewhere in the side.

North Macedonia test comes before Villa return

The Scottish FA confirms a 7.45pm BST kick-off in Skopje, before Scotland host Slovenia on Tuesday, October 6.

McGinn completed the Switzerland match after Jack Hendry’s early dismissal, as detailed in our Aston Villa international tracker.

That leaves two further international fixtures before Villa return to Premier League action against Brentford on October 10.

For Unai Emery, McGinn’s workload across those games will be worth following as preparations for the club’s next fixture continue.

For Scotland, the immediate task is turning the midfielder’s public backing into a first win under Pocognoli.
