Jacob Ramsey made 22 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa last season but only amassed 614 minutes of playing time, so 2021/22 is certainly his breakout campaign at senior level. The 20-year-old has started 22 league games, scoring six goals with one assist, so the future looks bright for Ramsey.

He’s impressed so much as club level that there’s talk of him showing his worth at international level. Ramsey has played for England U18s, U19s, U20s and U21, making a total of 13 appearances for the youth sides, but Gregg Evans of The Athletic believes he’s close to getting into the senior team.

Evans says ‘Ramsey is starting to knock on the door for England’ and noted how much he impressed for the U21s this season too. Gareth Southgate has often promoted players from the youth side to the first-team, so Evans believes Ramsey could be in contention if he continues to improve.

The 20-year-old hasn’t made England’s 25-man squad ahead of March’s friendlies with Switzerland and Ivory Coast, but Southgate does have Ramsey in his sights. There’s just stiff competition in midfield.

Kevin Campbell recently said the Englishman deserves a call-up to the national team, but opportunities for Ramsey might not come until the Nations League returns in June.
