Aston Villa’s Palhinha setback suddenly looks far worse after £38m injury blow

Aston Villa’s failure to reach an agreement for João Palhinha suddenly looks far more damaging after João Gomes joined Unai Emery’s growing midfield injury list.

Villa had hoped to add Palhinha after the Portugal international agreed personal terms, but Bayern Munich have rejected the proposed loan structure and sporting director Max Eberl has now publicly ruled out an agreement on the current basis.

Hours later, Villa were dealt another problem. Gomes, their £38million summer signing from Wolves, is reportedly facing between two and four weeks out after suffering an injury following the UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Aston Villa midfield suddenly looks stretched

Gomes was supposed to be one of the pillars of Villa’s rebuilt midfield.

His Premier League experience, ball-winning and intensity offered Emery an immediate replacement following the summer departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United.

ReadAstonVilla explained the scale of that rebuild when Villa completed the £38m signing of João Gomes, with Amadou Onana already facing a lengthy absence following his serious knee injury.

Losing Gomes, even for several weeks rather than months, therefore leaves Villa significantly lighter than Emery would have wanted heading into the Premier League campaign.

Boubacar Kamara and John McGinn remain available, while Johan Manzambi offers another option, but the number of proven senior combinations has been reduced.

That makes the breakdown of the Palhinha negotiations particularly frustrating.

Palhinha looked like an obvious short-term solution

Palhinha was hardly a speculative target by the time negotiations collapsed.

Villa had already progressed far enough to agree terms with the midfielder before submitting a loan proposal containing an option to buy. Bayern rejected that structure because they want a permanent transfer.

ReadAstonVilla reported on Thursday that Bayern had rejected Aston Villa’s opening Palhinha offer despite the player agreeing terms.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl then went considerably further on Friday, saying there was “no chance” of the two clubs reaching an agreement under the present circumstances. German outlet Welt reports that the proposed Villa transfer has fallen through.

Palhinha would have offered something Villa currently need: an experienced defensive midfielder capable of stepping immediately into Premier League football.

Gomes’ injury makes that requirement harder to ignore.

Villa may have to move quickly

There is still time in the transfer window for Villa to change direction.

The club could theoretically return to Bayern with a permanent proposal, although Eberl’s comments suggest a significant shift would be required to reopen negotiations.

Alternatively, Villa may have to accelerate work on another midfielder.

ReadAstonVilla previously reported that Rangers midfielder Nico Raskin has been monitored by Villa, although there has been no indication yet that Villa have progressed that interest into a formal move.

That distinction matters. Villa do not simply need another name on a shortlist.

With Onana unavailable, Tielemans gone and Gomes now facing a spell out, Emery could benefit from another midfielder capable of contributing immediately.

Palhinha appeared capable of filling that role.

His proposed transfer collapsing was already a setback. Gomes’ injury has made the consequences considerably harder for Villa to brush aside.
